The Crypt of St Mary’s Cathedral with Fr Don Richardson

On 23rd June 2019, the Dean of the Cathedral, Fr Don Richardson, will join us for a special Sunday-afternoon talk in and about the Crypt. The Crypt of St Mary’s Cathedral is well known for its striking design, unlike anything else in the Cathedral. Probably the most impressive feature of the Crypt is its multi-coloured terrazzo floor, quite unlike anything else in the Cathedral.

The talk will be held at 3pm on Sunday 23rd June 2019 in the Crypt, and will involve walking around the interior of the Crypt. Please meet in the Crypt cloister, down the steps opposite the formal entrance to Cathedral House. The tour of the Crypt will take about an hour, and will be followed by some refreshments, followed by the opportunity to go up into the Cathedral for solemn Choral Vespers and Benediction at 5pm. Tickets are $10 for members ($15 for non-members).

Special reduced-price tickets are available for Members who buy online: if you are a member and cannot see the Members’ price of $10 each, then you will need to log in. If you do not have a password, please send an email to info@cathedralfriends.org.au, and we will happily send you one. Please book in advance if you can: some tickets might be available on the afternoon.

The Cathedral’s music programme, with Thomas Wilson

We are honoured again to host the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Mr Thomas Wilson, for a speaker event, on 5th September 2019. Thomas will be speaking about the Cathedral’s music programme, including the work of the world-famous Cathedral Choir, which sings at more than 600 regularly scheduled service per year. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about the way that Cathedral music works, and to see inside the Choir Rooms (by Thomas’s kind invitation), which aren’t normally open to the public.

The talk will be held at 6.30pm (after Vespers and Mass) on Thursday 5th September 2019 in the Choir Rooms. You can reach the Choir Rooms by going down the steps opposite the formal entrance to Cathedral House, and down again from the Crypt cloister. The talk will take about an hour, and will be followed by wine and cheese. Tickets are $10 for members ($15 for non-members).

Special reduced-price tickets are available for Members who buy online: if you are a member and cannot see the Members’ price of $10 each, then you will need to log in. The windows of the Cathedral with Fr Don Richardson

We are honoured to host the Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral, Fr Don Richardson, for a speaker event, on 5th December 2019. Fr Don will be talking about the stained-glass windows in the Cathedral. Fr Don spoke to the Friends last year about the particularly fine windows of St Mary’s Cathedral, exhibiting some of the great amount of detail depicted within them which can easily be missed by the casual observer. This year, Fr Don will be showing even more of the windows to anyone interested in the Cathedral.

The talk will be held at 6.30pm (after Vespers and Mass) on Thursday 5th December 2019 in the Cathedral, and will involve walking around the building. Please meet inside the eastern doors (next to the Chapel of the Irish Saints). The tour of the windows will take about an hour, and will be followed by wine and cheese.
